Inspire children to write creatively and independently

How can you help KS2 children enjoy the activity of creative writing?

Every written task we set children teaches them something – good or bad – about writing and their relationship to it.

Our key task is to give them as many activities with as high a chance of success as we possibly can.

With worked examples for inspiration, the book “Cracking Creative Writing in KS2” aims for children to be independent and in charge of their own writing.

Each idea in Cracking Creative Writing in KS2 adopts the same format: each one is written directly to the writers. Taking a recipe-style, step-by-step approach and offering a worked example at the very start, means individuals can see the kind of outcome they are aiming for.

Alternatively, you can choose to use any of the ideas to teach as a group or whole class activity.

The ideas cover a great range of writing-related features and terms as well as some creative routes into those trickier aspects of English grammar and punctuation. Some are straightforward, others more demanding. Rather than using decontextualized exercises, these activities invite young writers to explore the language.

So, what would YOU call a group of snakes? Explore collective nouns with this activity.
