Description
After her wayward antics reach their pinnacle, Abigail’s teacher Miss Wiggs publicly reprimands her (to her dismay) as having humiliated the school. She then challenges Abigail to find anything merit-worthy to add to her report and so Abigail employs the help of Mr Steet, the patient teaching assistant.
He helps her to reassess those behaviours that get her into trouble and put them into a positive light. She is then able to see how she can use her zest and unparalleled enthusiasm to drive for success – as long as she starts to be more mindful of consequences, and of others around her. Mr Steet’s kind, tolerant nature really helps Abigail to ‘turn things around’ for the better. Often, children who have been naughty feel that it is impossible to start being good again.
This assembly story demonstrates that this is not the case, so that children who might have given up on correcting their school reputation, or their report, feel encouraged that there is hope to make amends. Mr Steet is a very positive presence in the story, reassuring listeners also that their teachers are there to help them- not to tell them off. Being mindful is a very important life lesson that Abigail learns here, and listeners can too.
