The Witness

This story is taken from More Brilliant Stories for Assemblies, written by Elizabeth Sach and published by Brilliant Publications.

Finding courage to speak up about something that is morally wrong is something most adults struggle with, let alone primary school children! In this tale, poor Ranpresh is a recurring victim of “The Gang” of bullies at his school and he is too afraid of the repercussions of telling the truth about his repeated injuries/sickness.

When his classmate Hannah notices what is going on, she too is conflicted, however she is so fuelled by her anger towards the unjust situation that she marches to the Headteacher and reports the bullies before the problem can get any worse.

Description

Hannah recalls a very important lesson “if it feels bad; it is bad”- teaching listeners to rely on their gut feeling and take ownership of their instinct, because more often than not, it is right.

Hannah’s bravery in this story will inspire and empower children that hear it in assemblies to act on wrongful situations they see around them. They learn that they have a moral duty to help out and speak up when they see others suffering in order to become “part of the solution” and can recognise they will feel rewarded for doing the right thing.
