What’s new at Brilliant Publications? (12 May 2022)

Here is what has been happening in the office this week.

Why not hold a French Phonics Festival? Catherine Cantin, co-author of 21 Fun Songs to Teach French Phonics, is going to be leading her first French Phonics Festival today with Amanda MacRae, using songs and worksheets from her book.

Three schools are coming together to sing, dance, do an arts and crafts activity and a French phonics treasure hunt.  Catherine says the event was easy to set up and is ticking quite a lot of MFL boxes for the schools taking part. We look forward to hearing how it went, Catherine!

If you would be interested in doing something similar in your area, please let me know and I will put you in touch with Catherine.

How long does it take you to make a purchasing decision?

I recently read an interesting study carried out by Sprint Education. They surveyed 3,000+ teachers and school staff to find out how and when they make purchasing decisions. The majority of respondents said that they take up to 3 months to make a purchasing decision. Given how tight school budgets are, this doesn’t surprise me. Is that how long it takes your school to come to a decision?

They also found that over 90% of respondents preferred to hear about offers by email (as opposed to mail, social media or phone). (As a caveat, I should mention that Sprint Education specialise in sending out email marketing campaigns to schools so the respondents might have been pre-disposed to receiving emails.)

We had already decided last year to stop mailing our catalogues to schools. Now that searching on the internet is so easy, we felt it was better for the environment not to print 1000s of catalogues and encourage teachers to look on our website instead. I must confess that I do like flicking through catalogues and sometimes see things that I think I would have missed if I was only looking online. If you are the same, you can download our catalogues from our website.

Sometimes I forget what year it is!

We aren’t even halfway through 2022, so I don’t want to wish the year away. However, this week I had the embarrassing situation of having an online form rejected as I had put in the incorrect date for today’s date. I put 2023 instead of 2022! You could say it is due to old age, but my excuse is that recently I’ve been working on lots of books that won’t be published until 2023. I’d been typing 2023 so many times, that was the year that came to me first of all!

I’m looking forward to sharing information on these new titles with you soon!
