How can you enhance reading for meaning skills?

The importance of reading for meaning should never be underestimated.
It is vital that children understand what they read. More importantly, it is fundamental that they enjoy what they are reading.
If we are asking children to read, understand and answer questions from a passage, that passage should at least engage their attention, and indeed their teacher’s attention as well.
What about answering reading content domain style questions on a fast-paced cautionary tale about Greedy Sam?
There was a cat whose name was Sam
Who loved to pilfer chunks of ham.
I’m sure you can probably guess that pilfering the ham did not go according to plan. In fact,
Since this event our greedy Sam
Has never touched a slice of ham.
The passages in Brilliant Activities for Reading Comprehension, Year 6 have been trialled in schools to ensure that they will grab pupils’ attention and so help them to develop a love of reading.
The comprehension passages cover a range of genres, from newspaper articles and descriptive reports, to plays, stories and poems. This 3rd edition contains over a third new passages, including many new non-fiction pieces linked to the history curriculum.
The book contains a variety of questions which cover a range of question styles, with a mixture of selected response questions (such as multiple choice and matching activities), as well as questions requiring a short or extended response.
Attention has been given to linking the activities to the relevant Programmes of Study in the National Curriculum for England (September 2014) as well as to the reading content domains used in the Key Stage 2 SATs.
