Philippus Primary Latin

Description

Philippus and his beloved horse Pelagus are part of an acting troupe travelling around Italy in the early 1^st century BC. Key Stage 2 children will learn Latin as they follow the adventures of Philippus and his troupe. Through fun and varied activities, children will discover that Latin is so much more than a dead language.

Philippus Primary Latin provides a fabulous way to meet the National Curriculum requirements for language study at Key Stage 2:

• Pronunciation is easy
• No specialist knowledge of Latin is required to teach the course, making it ideal for use by both specialists and non-specialists
• English vocabulary is improved through learning derivatives of Latin root words
• It provides a good foundation and hook for the study of Modern Foreign Languages
• It develops a good knowledge of ancient civilisation and its relevance to today’s society, with links to the Key Stage 2 history programme of study
• All abilities and interests are engaged through following the adventures of entertaining characters, with fun and varied activities for learners to take part in
• The flexible format means that it can be used as part of the curriculum, in after-school clubs or even for home study

Philippus Primary Latin consists of twelve lessons with ample activities for two or three sessions, depending on time available and the requirements of the class. The free digital downloads provide all the resources needed to ensure coverage of the curriculum and adaption to suit the learning needs of all pupils. Vocabulary and grammar are systematically introduced as you progress through the course.

“I teach Latin for one hour per week and looking at the course Philippus is, like a breath of fresh air.  My pupils enjoyed the section on verbs and enjoyed guessing their meanings and playing the game with the dice.
