Free Choice Time

Best friends Tizzy and Kezia have been joined at the hip for longer than they can remember. They do everything together, so when they are given free license over classroom activities and want to try different things, problems arise.

Kezia tries to break Tizzy away from her colouring, and in the process Tizzy’s work gets damaged. Tizzy responds by pushing Kezia and when Kezia is hurt Tizzy gets into trouble and she too becomes very upset. When the girls’ mothers are called into school to intervene the situation becomes clearer. All is resolved quickly and Tizzy and Kezia are inseparable once more but they have learned that they are allowed to be different, and to make their own choices.

This story about friendship comes from More Brilliant Assembly Stories, written by Elizabeth Sach and published by Brilliant Publications.

Young primary school children’s friendships have a tendency to be very co-dependant, and often very intense. The togetherness and sharing this nurtures is heart-warming, however it is important for children to understand that they are entitled to be individuals too.

Sometimes this lesson is learned the hard way, but this story will encourage assembly listeners to have confidence and conviction in their own choices, and importantly – to accept others’ differences.

Children will also learn that turning to violence, and/or trying to force others to do what they want, are ultimately futile methods that are likely to result in their own punishment or upset. It is much better that children learn the everlasting quality of acceptance from an early age.
