The Eagle and the Lion
Primary school children listening to this story will learn that there is a necessity for collaboration in everyday life, and also in times of crisis. Here, both ‘King of the Skies’ (Eagle) and ‘King of the Plains’ (Lion) parade around their domains self-assured and full of pride, adamant that they have ‘nothing to fear’. This fact comes under dispute when the heavens open and both creatures have to take shelter- meaning neither is able to get out to obtain food supplies.
Physically weakened by their circumstances, but fed up, hungry, and determined to better things both Eagle and Lion flee their shelters and end up colliding messily in the rain and mud. This causes the pair much hilarity and they bond. Lion then devises a plan to ensure that Eagle, himself, and their respective families can get fed. He invites Eagle to nestle in his warmth so that his feathers can dry and he is able to go hunting. Perhaps tentatively, Eagle agrees and the pair embarks upon their mission- together. Forevermore they know that they can trust one another, and before long they are back to their Kingly status of strength, come rain or shine.

Description
In this assembly story, both Kings believe themselves to be invincible, but if it wasn’t for them abandoning preconceptions and uniting as a team then they could well be suffering.
This tale may help children to think twice before committing to acting quite as superior as the Kings. Children are reminded that arrogance doesn’t always correlate to strength, and that sometimes we have to swallow our pride and get help from elsewhere to survive and succeed. This inspires children to take a leap of faith and extend a hand of friendship to another during troubled times. After all, what goes around comes back around.
