Not everyone wants a story

What is the most effective way of encouraging pupils to become independent readers of French?

It is quite common that when Key Stage 2 children are encouraged to read French, they are given a story to read.

And although this can work very well, not all KS2 children enjoy reading stories.

One way around this can be to encourage primary school pupils to become independent French readers of non-fiction material, where children are interested in the subject and so want to read in French.

It is to deal with this issue that we have produced three anthologies of Brilliant French Information Books for Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. Each anthology contains 6 short, highly-illustrated French information readers.

These non-fiction books contain facts and illustrations concerning the French-speaking world which will help pupils expand their ability to read French and enhance their knowledge of French culture.

Of course, there can be another problem, in that there may not be a specialist French teacher available to help the children work on these non-fiction books. To help in this regard each anthology comes with free downloadable files containing pdf copies of the teaching guide and books for display, along with audios of the texts read by a native French speaker.

The teaching guides contain notes for getting the most from the resource, background information on each topic and language focus, English translations for the books and answers to the quizzes.

In this way children can read French, while expanding their vocabulary in a very controlled way – and all without a specialist French teacher present.
