Contemporary literature extracts to keep pupils engaged

Support KS2 pupils in maintaining positive attitudes to reading.
There are so many incredible books being published every month by authors who are striving to entertain, educate and inspire their readers.
How do you choose which extracts to use in your lessons?
One of the greatest strengths of contemporary literature is the diversity of the stories, characters and authors. Children are able to see themselves in books more now than ever before.
Developing Reading Comprehension Skills Years 5-6: Contemporary Children’s Literature contains 12 carefully selected, high quality extracts from modern children’s stories. The richness of language and the art of storytelling provided by these texts allow children to expand their understanding of the world.
The extracts have been chosen to provide teachers with a variety of authors, genres and themes. This broadens the range of children’s reading and ensures there will be something of interest for every reader.
Each of the 12 extracts from contemporary children’s literature is accompanied by eight sets of questions based on the Key Stage 2 (KS2) Reading Content Domains and National Curriculum. This book provides opportunities to tackle more complex vocabulary, explore how authors use language to impact their readers and develop endurance for longer passages.
