How to improve imaginative writing

What is the most effective way of enabling children to produce more imaginative writing in just a few weeks?

The debate about how one can improve the creativity of children is one that has raged for years, not least because first, the definition of what “creative” actually means has never been fully resolved and second, because there is no universal agreement on what methods can be used to enhance children’s creativity.

The debate about how one can improve the creativity of children is one that has raged for years, not least because first, the definition of what “creative” actually means has never been fully resolved and second, because there is no universal agreement on what methods can be used to enhance children’s creativity.

However, there is agreement that being “creative” isn’t the same as being “different”, since “creativity” implies something that is interesting, worthwhile and stimulating in a way that a set of words written at random normally isn’t.

For creativity does not mean simply novelty, or an absence of rules – it normally means using existing rules in a different way to produce something that other readers will find novel, interesting, stimulating and informative.

In terms of written work this often means the children learning to use different sentence structures in their writing, and as a technique focussing on sentence structures this can indeed work very well.

The point here is, of course, that we are not looking for the child to be totally imaginative and creative in the sense that “no one has ever written like this before,” but rather creative in the sense that the child is exploring ideas and structures that they have personally not tackled before.

Thus, using this approach, children can become ever more explorative and have a much higher chance of writing more interestingly and more successfully.

Daily Sentence Structures is a book that is dedicated to helping with the introduction of new structures in a way that gives pupils rapid success.  This in turn means that the children will feel rewarded for their efforts and encourage them to continue their exploration of their own creativity.

All that is required is a series of 15-minute daily sessions.  The benefit will not only be more imaginative writing but also a more positive attitude within the children, both to the process of writing, and to the writing that they have produced.
